This is the story of an individual who managed to piece together some of the items needed to paint his wheels, but skipped a crucial step: clear coat. The reason he skipped the clear coat step is because he feared that clear coat would make his wheels glossy in the end. Ultimately, he wanted a flat black look, not a glossy finish. Under normal circumstances, standard clear coat will make your wheels glossy. So I definitely understand the motive.
But here’s what happens over time if you do not use any clear coat. Notice how the black base coat is being eaten away. The gray is the primer showing through.
At just 9 months Jimmy just couldn’t take it anymore. He contacted me so I could troubleshoot the situation for him and recommend some ways we could fix the issue. I determined the problem to be caused by the lack of clear coat. At rimpainter.com we include clear coat in every kit purchase and provide unparalleled support and advice, even if you purchased your product elsewhere. Jimmy is now a happy rimpainter customer. Thank you Jimmy! (story used with permission)
