The Importance of Using Clear Coat, Illustrated

by Christian on January 27, 2010

This is the story of an individual who managed to piece together some of the items needed to paint his wheels, but skipped a crucial step: clear coat. The reason he skipped the clear coat step is because he feared that clear coat would make his wheels glossy in the end. Ultimately, he wanted a flat black look, not a glossy finish. Under normal circumstances, standard clear coat will make your wheels glossy. So I definitely understand the motive.

But here’s what happens over time if you do not use any clear coat. Notice how the black base coat is being eaten away. The gray is the primer showing through.

No clearcoat1

No clearcoat2

No clearcoat3

No clearcoat4

At just 9 months Jimmy just couldn’t take it anymore. He contacted me so I could troubleshoot the situation for him and recommend some ways we could fix the issue. I determined the problem to be caused by the lack of clear coat. At rimpainter.com we include clear coat in every kit purchase and provide unparalleled support and advice, even if you purchased your product elsewhere. Jimmy is now a happy rimpainter customer. Thank you Jimmy! (story used with permission)

January 20, 2010

When I created my “How to Paint Your Rims/Wheels” video for YouTube, I never would have guessed it would surpass the 300K views mark. Well it did. And it did so in 3 years. Why did I create that video anyway? First, I had a full-size spare I needed to paint. Second, because I [...]

Wiper Arm Restoration

December 29, 2009

Need an easy way to identify a high-mileage vehicle without looking at the odometer? Check out the wiper arms! Sounds strange, I know. But for most vehicles paint wearing off the wiper arm(s) is a sure sign to its mileage. Of course it will vary with garaged vs. non-garaged vehicles and from one state to [...]

A Tough Mustang Gets Even Tougher

December 11, 2009

I always ask my customers for before and after pics of their ride. Today I received pics from a customer in FL and was amazed at the results. His Mustang, already custom in many ways, went from “nice!” to “dang!”
Now it’s almost difficult to look at the before pic because the after pic looks [...]

Lexus IS gets “flat-blacked”

November 27, 2009

It makes my day when I see one of our kits successfully applied on the wheels of a “higher end” vehicle, such as a Lexus. It’s not necessarily because the product we carry is now literally rolling around the streets on a nice vehicle; rather, it’s that the owner of the expensive vehicle was willing [...]

Yes, Bikes Too

September 6, 2009

Fellow enthusiasts -
The products we carry are not limited to automobile rims. The same concepts found within our How To Guide apply to a multitude of other uses as well. To prove this point, I decided to take on a somewhat different modification idea: Painting a bike frame and spoked wheels. In this case the [...]

Black Wagon Wheels?

August 1, 2009

A very kind neighbor gave us a wagon a while back. My son loves it. But I could just tell that he wanted to roll on black rims instead of the plastic white hubcaps. I mean, who doesn’t want to roll on black rims anyway? So, after a rather rough week, I decided to take [...]

Skeptical? I was too.

July 16, 2009

I’ll admit it, I was hesitant to spray paint my rims the first time. There were a lot of “what ifs” and, quite frankly, some folks out there ripped on the idea before I could even get the first coat of paint on. That’s what I get for making a “gauging interest post” on a [...]

Great example of gunmetal rims on a Mini Cooper

July 8, 2009

Check out the graphite/gunmetal color of these rims. Notice how the outer lip of the rim was masked off, leaving it with an aluminum on gunmetal look. This particular color selection blends in with the over fender color, while drawing attention to the red calipers. Pretty sweet.  Mini’s make a statement stock, but this one [...]
